With the debate over the 2026 Ballon d’Or already simmering, the Real Madrid forward made his position crystal clear: if he had a vote, it would go to himself.

Speaking to French outlet L’Équipe, in comments relayed by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Mbappé was asked the question every elite player secretly weighs up: who deserves the Golden Ball?

“Who would I vote for the Ballon d'Or? I'd vote for me. It is an individual award. We look at what the player has done individually,” he said, before adding: “When we look at the arguments… I look, and I say to myself that yeah… it wouldn't be stolen.”

It was a blunt answer, but not an empty one.

Last season, Mbappé tore through defences in Real Madrid colours, breaking the 40-goal barrier. Then came the summer, and with it another layer to his legacy: he smashed the all-time goalscoring record at the World Cup, a stage where reputations are usually made over a decade, not a month.

Those numbers place him among the clear frontrunners for France Football’s prize, to be handed out in late October. The counter-argument is equally stark. For all his goals, neither Real Madrid nor France converted his brilliance into silverware. No league title. No Champions League. No major international trophy.

That tension sits at the heart of this year’s Ballon d’Or debate. What matters more: the weight of trophies, or the sheer force of an individual season?
