Killian Phillips has been handed a late chance to stake his claim on the international stage after a bruising weekend forced Heimir Hallgrimsson into a reshuffle.

The St Mirren midfielder has been drafted into the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures, stepping in after injuries ruled out Jamie McGrath and Harvey Vale.

McGrath, of Hibernian, and Queens Park Rangers’ Vale both broke down in the warm-up before club games on Saturday, McGrath ahead of Hibs’ clash with Aberdeen and Vale before QPR’s meeting with Preston North End. Initial concern quickly turned into confirmation on Monday morning: neither would be fit for the international window.

That opened the door for Phillips.
