Joshua vs Fury: Date and Venue Set for Epic Heavyweight Clash in Wales
Joshua vs Fury: Date and Venue Announced for Major Boxing Event
The long-awaited showdown between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury has finally been confirmed. The British heavyweight stars will face off on Friday, 11 December at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, with the fight broadcast live on Netflix.
The location was a point of contention, nearly shifting the event to Madison Square Garden in New York City—a move that would have sparked significant controversy. Instead, the fight will take place in Wales, though the ring walks might happen just after midnight local time to suit viewers in the United States.
The Fighters and Their Journey
Joshua, aged 36, and Fury, 38, are both former two-time world heavyweight champions. Fans and analysts have debated a potential match-up between them for nearly a decade. They were originally set to fight in 2021, but that bout collapsed when Deontay Wilder threatened legal action against Fury, leading Fury to defend his WBC title in a trilogy fight with Wilder instead.
During that period, Fury’s victory over Wilder came shortly after Joshua lost his unified titles to Oleksandr Usyk. Joshua’s defeats to Usyk continued into a rematch in 2022, while Usyk also defeated Fury twice in 2024. Despite these setbacks, the idea of a Joshua vs Fury fight remained alive.
Recent Career Highlights and Build-Up
After retiring for the fifth time, Fury returned in April, winning a points decision against Arslanbek Makhmudov as Joshua watched ringside. Soon after, their bout was officially signed, though without a confirmed date or venue.
Joshua worked on his comeback with warm-up fights, including a notable sixth-round victory over Jake Paul in December. Shortly after that fight, Joshua survived a serious car crash that tragically killed two of his teammates. In July, he faced Kristian Prenga, surviving early knockdowns before scoring a second-round knockout. Fury fought Mariusz Wach in Thailand around the same time, winning in seven rounds in a largely untelevised match.
Negotiations and Final Decisions
There were rumors about holding the fight in London’s Wembley Stadium in November, with ring walks scheduled at 2 a.m. GMT to reach global audiences. Joshua’s contract specified a UK location, whereas Fury’s terms allowed more flexibility, including potential U.S. venues. Although some promoters pushed for an American setting, Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn insisted on a UK fight, so the bout remained in Wales.
"Two of the best heavyweights of this generation, finally in the ring together," said Saudi matchmaker Turki Alalshikh. "This will be one of the biggest fights in boxing history. I am very happy to make this fight happen for the fans."
