JJ Gabriel Saga Deepens: Manchester United Starlet in Barcelona

The tug-of-war for JJ Gabriel has left Manchester United exposed – and the 15-year-old forward is now in Barcelona while some of Europe’s superclubs circle.

Gabriel has told United he wants his registration cancelled with immediate effect, a clear and deliberate move to prise open the door to a move away. Real Madrid’s interest is described as firm, while Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain and Barcelona are all tracking the teenager.

He left the UK on Thursday, first heading to France, and is now in Barcelona as the battle for his future gathers pace.

A registration row with high stakes

United’s stance on his registration is crucial. If the club decide to hold it, Gabriel would be blocked from joining another English side until the end of the season. That buys United time on home soil, but not necessarily abroad.

The London-born forward could change the landscape entirely if he secures a European Union passport. Through his father, a former Republic of Ireland international, or his mother, who has Greek-Cypriot heritage, Gabriel has potential routes into EU citizenship. If that paperwork comes through, he would be free to join a club in the EU when he turns 16 on 6 October.

That date now looms large. So does the sense that United are fighting the clock as much as they are fighting rival clubs.

From hat-trick high to training ground absence

Only days ago, the story around Gabriel was purely footballing. He marked his Uefa Youth League debut on 10 September with a hat-trick, an explosive entrance that underlined why Europe’s elite have been paying attention.

He has not trained with United since.

Uefa Youth League rules mean he cannot represent another club in this season’s competition, a rare piece of protection for United in a situation where they control little else.

But frustration has been building around the player. Sources close to Gabriel were furious that United did not register him for their Champions League opener against Sabah FK, a match Michael Carrick’s side won 4-0. For a teenager riding a wave after his Youth League treble, that omission cut deep.

The tension has spilled into his domestic involvement too. Gabriel scored in each of his first two Premier League 2 appearances for United this season, yet he will not feature against Brentford at Leigh Sports Village on Friday. A fast-rising prospect has been abruptly removed from the pitch.

Carrick treads carefully

Michael Carrick, now having to manage both a dressing room and a developing off-field storm, faced fresh questions about Gabriel at his Friday news conference ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Fulham.

"He's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important we don't play anything out here," Carrick said, leaning heavily on the need for protection rather than escalation.

"With the exposure and scrutiny and everything, you got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything.

"The situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's OK is the important thing."

The message was clear: United want to dial down the noise. The reality is less quiet. A 15-year-old forward, fresh from a European hat-trick, has stopped training, wants out of his registration and is now in Barcelona with Real Madrid, Bayern and PSG all watching closely.

The next move may not be United’s to make. It may belong to a teenager, a passport application, and a 16th birthday that could reshape one of the most intriguing early transfer battles of the season.
