FC Groningen Defeats PEC Zwolle 3-0 to Climb to Sixth Place
PEC Zwolle arrived in Groningen still carrying the scars of a 0-7 humiliation against Feyenoord. They left with a fresh set.
Under the lights at the Euroborg, FC Groningen never let them breathe. Dick Lukkien’s side pressed high, played with purpose, and walked away with a commanding 3-0 win that lifts them to sixth place and deepens Zwolle’s early-season anxiety down in 16th.
Groningen seize control early
From the opening whistle, Groningen smelled blood. They snapped into challenges, moved the ball sharply, and pinned PEC back. The visitors, desperate for a reaction, instead looked tentative, almost afraid of another early collapse.
After 20 minutes, the pressure told.
Marco Rente stepped in from the back and threaded a clever ball into Jorg Schreuders. The midfielder didn’t panic. He paused, drew the defence, then rolled the ball back perfectly into the stride of Thom van Bergen. One touch, calm finish. 1-0, and fully deserved.
Zwolle wobbled. Groningen did not let them off.
Schreuders doubles the damage
The second goal summed up Zwolle’s current crisis. Ryan Thomas, under pressure, lost the ball in a dangerous area. Schreuders pounced instantly, drove forward and, from outside the box, whipped a shot with his supposedly weaker left foot.
The ball flew past the goalkeeper. 2-0, and the Euroborg roared. Schreuders had created the first and finished the second; Zwolle had helped both along with slack play in possession.
By half-time, Groningen were in control, managing the tempo and winning almost every key duel. Zwolle’s response to last weekend’s thrashing still hadn’t arrived.
PEC finally threaten, but Groningen kill it
After the interval, PEC Zwolle at least showed a pulse. They pushed their defensive line higher, tried to combine in wide areas and finally carved out a real chance.
A low cross from the left skidded through the area and found Gabriël Reiziger, who stretched to make contact. For a brief second, it looked like the lifeline they so badly needed. The ball drifted just wide.
That moment passed, and with it, any realistic hope of a comeback.
Groningen settled again, kept Zwolle at arm’s length and waited for the next opening. It came from the training ground.
Land’s thunderbolt seals it
On 68 minutes, an indirect, rehearsed free-kick routine unfolded to perfection. The ball was laid off into the path of Tygo Land, and he did the rest. He stepped onto it and hammered a fierce strike into the top corner.
3-0. A statement of both planning and execution.
The visitors looked broken. Groningen, by contrast, played with the freedom of a side that knew the job was done but still wanted more.
Van Bergen nearly added to the damage late on. A loose ball dropped invitingly to him in the box, and for a moment the stadium braced for his second of the night. This time his left foot let him down, the shot skewing off target.
It didn’t matter. The scoreboard, and the table, already told the story: Groningen climbing with authority, PEC Zwolle sinking and searching for answers.
