Elgin Baylor's Estate Battle: Daughter Claims Stepmother Withheld Information

Elgin Baylor spent a lifetime deciding games on the court. In death, his name is now attached to a different kind of battle.

According to court documents filed in Los Angeles and obtained by TMZ, the Hall of Famer’s daughter, Alison Clayton, has petitioned the court, accusing her stepmother, Elaine Baylor, of withholding key information about Baylor’s estate and her inheritance.

Baylor died on March 22, 2021, at the age of 86. Clayton claims she and her brother were never told their father had passed away at the time, alleging Elaine did not inform them of his death and has since refused to share any details about the estate.

In the filing, Clayton says she moved to the East Coast in 1991 but stayed in touch with her father for decades, maintaining a relationship until around 2018. She contends Elaine knew about that ongoing relationship and still chose to cut her out when it came to Baylor’s final affairs.

Elaine has not yet responded to the case.

Baylor’s legacy on the floor is undisputed. The No. 1 overall pick in the 1958 NBA Draft, he played 14 seasons for the Lakers and earned his place in the Basketball Hall of Fame, widely regarded as one of the greatest players the game has ever seen.

Now, instead of arguments about where he ranks among the all-time greats, the fight is over what he left behind—and who, in the end, gets to share in it.
