Chelsea’s midfield rebuild has taken a sharp turn away from Rome and firmly towards Monaco.

Roma have publicly denied receiving any formal offer from Chelsea for midfielder Manu Kone, cooling talk of a late-window raid on Serie A. Kone remains a player admired at Stamford Bridge, but Roma boss Gian Piero Gasperini moved to shut that door on Monday night with a clear statement aimed at blocking any approach.

So Chelsea have looked elsewhere.

The Premier League club have lodged a £38.5m bid for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, a move that cuts straight to the heart of their wider transfer strategy. This is not a luxury signing. It is the first major step in preparing for life after Enzo Fernandez.

Fernandez is edging towards a blockbuster move to Manchester City, with a fee of about £120m being lined up before the transfer deadline. Chelsea are ready to cash in, but only on one condition: they must secure a replacement first.

That is where Camara comes in. Talks with Monaco are ongoing, with Chelsea pushing to get an agreement in place quickly enough to unlock Fernandez’s switch to the Etihad.
