Chaos at Croke Park: Allen–Carty Heavyweight Clash Ends in No Contest

On a night built to celebrate Katie Taylor’s farewell, the chief support bout at Croke Park produced a very different kind of drama – abrupt, unsettling, and over almost before it began.

Dave Allen’s heavyweight meeting with Irish favourite Thomas Carty officially lasted just one minute and 22 seconds. It will linger far longer in the memory for the way it ended.

The pair had barely started to feel each other out when Allen, the 34-year-old Doncaster journeyman, stepped in and whipped a heavy right hand around the guard. It landed on the back of Carty’s head as the Dublin southpaw moved, and the momentum sent him tumbling through the ropes and out of the ring.

One moment he was trading at centre ring. The next, he was on his back on the floor outside, staring up at the Croke Park lights as 80,000 fans fell into a stunned hush.

Medical staff rushed to his aid. Carty received attention for several minutes, including oxygen, as Allen paced in a neutral corner, looking as confused as anyone inside the stadium. This was supposed to be the biggest opportunity of Carty’s 12-fight career, a showcase in front of a home crowd on an historic night for Irish boxing. Instead, the ring became a crime scene of pure misfortune.

After a tense wait, Carty finally rose and, to relief all around, was able to walk back to the dressing room under his own power. The referee had no choice. With Carty unable to continue, the bout was abandoned and ruled a no contest.

There was no celebration, no sense of closure. Just a heavyweight fight that never really happened, an 80,000-strong crowd left shaking their heads, and a veteran like Allen standing in the ring, bemused, on one of the biggest stages of his career.
