Brian Sorensen Joins Republic of Ireland for World Cup Play-Offs

Brian Sorensen is set to step back into international contention – this time on the touchline.

The former Everton manager will join the Republic of Ireland women’s set-up this year as assistant coach for their Women’s World Cup play-off qualifiers, adding a sharp tactical mind to a staff gearing up for knockout football. He will work alongside Liverpool coach Amber Whiteley in a revamped backroom team built for high-stakes games.

Sorensen is expected to combine the role with his current position as technical director of Aston Villa Women. He will remain in his Villa post and link up with Ireland during international windows, a dual responsibility that underlines his growing influence in the women’s game.

There is already familiarity at the top of the Irish camp. Head coach Carla Ward previously faced Sorensen in the Women’s Super League when she was in charge of Villa and he was at Everton, their sides clashing in tightly contested league encounters. Now they will share a dugout rather than opposite technical areas, blending their experience from England’s top flight for Ireland’s benefit.

World Cup Play-Off Qualifiers

Ireland’s task is clear and unforgiving. They face Kazakhstan in the first round of World Cup play-off qualifying, a two-legged tie scheduled for 9 and 13 October. Over 180 minutes, there is little margin for error, and every adjustment from the bench will matter.

With Sorensen and Whiteley joining Ward, Ireland enter those dates with a staff steeped in WSL intensity. The question now is whether that club-honed edge can carry a nation through the pressure of play-off football.
