Aston Villa Hijack Liverpool's Move for PSG Starlet Mbaye

Aston Villa have muscled in on Liverpool’s plans and struck a deal with Paris Saint-Germain to sign highly rated winger Ibrahim Mbaye, prising one of Europe’s most coveted teenagers away from the French champions.

The 18-year-old, long viewed at Anfield as a potential heir to Mohamed Salah, is heading for the Premier League – just not to Merseyside. Liverpool sounded out PSG earlier in the summer and were quoted around €70 million, a figure they believed could eventually drop but not without a lengthy, draining negotiation. Jürgen Klopp’s old club chose not to burn time or leverage on a player they liked but did not view as their absolute priority.

Instead, Liverpool threw their weight behind a move for top target Bradley Barcola. That decision opened the door for Villa, who had been tracking Mbaye for months and were ready to move the moment PSG softened their stance.

They had tried once before. Villa’s interest dates back to January, when Unai Emery pushed for an attacking reinforcement and Mbaye’s name rose quickly to the top of their list. PSG refused to sell then, confident the teenager would play a central role in the second half of the campaign.

That never quite materialised.

After returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, where he featured for Senegal, Mbaye found his minutes squeezed. Competition for places in Paris intensified, and a player who had already clocked up 42 senior appearances for the club suddenly found himself watching more often than he was playing. The frustration grew. So did his desire for a new stage.

PSG, facing a forward who wanted regular football and a market still hot for his signature, eventually relented.

Villa strike at the right moment

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Villa have now agreed a €55 million fee with PSG, helped by the strong relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris. That connection smoothed talks that had previously looked complicated and allowed Villa to move quickly once Liverpool stepped aside.

Mbaye is expected to sign a long-term contract at Villa Park, with the club convinced they are buying not just potential but a player ready to contribute immediately at the top end of the Premier League. For a side preparing for the demands of domestic and European competition under Emery, that matters.

Emery has been clear for some time: he wanted another winger. Someone who could stretch the pitch, run at defenders, and give Villa a different gear in transition. Mbaye, a right-sided attacker with the versatility to drift across the front line, fits that brief.

The timing could hardly be better.

Villa have been in talks with AC Milan forward Rafael Leao in recent days, exploring an ambitious move for the Portuguese star. Those discussions did not go their way. Indications are that Leao has chosen Galatasaray as his preferred destination, unconvinced by the financial package on offer from Birmingham.

With that avenue closing, Villa needed another marquee option. Mbaye is that – and at 18, he brings a profile that can grow with the club.

A teenager with big-stage experience

For all his youth, Mbaye already carries the weight of big nights. Forty-two senior appearances for PSG, minutes in Ligue 1 and the Champions League, plus international exposure at the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup this summer with Senegal, form a résumé many players five years older would envy.

What he lacked in Paris was continuity. At Villa, he is being brought in to play, not to wait. Emery sees him as a prominent figure in his attacking rotation, a livewire presence who can change games and raise the ceiling of a team already on an upward curve.

Liverpool’s loss, then, is Villa’s gain. The club that once fought relegation battles now sits at the table for Europe’s brightest talents and wins.

The question now is not whether Mbaye is ready for the Premier League. It’s how quickly the league is ready for him.
