Arsenal Miss Out on Malick Fofana to Sunderland

Arsenal have been beaten to one of their prime Deadline Day targets – and by a fellow Premier League club willing to move faster and pay closer to the price.

The north London side had turned to Lyon winger Malick Fofana in a late attempt to bolster Mikel Arteta’s attacking options, opening talks with the Ligue 1 club on Monday. The 21-year-old was identified as a solution to a growing problem on the flanks, with Arsenal short on natural cover on the left.

Negotiations, though, stalled where they so often do: the fee.

Reports from Santi Aouna and David Ornstein say Arsenal refused to go to Lyon’s asking price of around €40 million. That hesitation opened the door. Another Premier League rival stepped through it.

Sunderland, sensing an opportunity, moved decisively. The Championship side agreed a €30 million deal with Lyon, with add-ons that could push the package towards the French club’s original valuation. While Arsenal debated, Sunderland acted.

The twist is all the sharper given how advanced Arsenal’s interest appeared to be. Fofana was believed to be keen on a move to north London, and Fabrizio Romano reported that the winger had already held talks with Arteta. The project, the profile, the stage – all of it pointed towards the Emirates.

Instead, he is now set to fly to the north east for a medical ahead of a shock Deadline Day switch to Sunderland.

Impact on Arsenal

For Arsenal, the timing and the position make this miss sting. The club sanctioned the departures of Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli earlier in the summer, leaving Arteta light on the left side of his attack. The squad picture has grown even thinner with Ethan Nwaneri due to undergo a medical at Borussia Dortmund ahead of a loan move.

Christos Tzolis has arrived from Club Brugge, but the plan clearly involved at least one more winger. Fofana was that late-window push, the player earmarked to restore depth and inject fresh energy into the wide areas.

Instead, Arsenal are left with a familiar Deadline Day feeling: a deal that got close, a price they would not meet, and a talent heading somewhere else.

Sunderland, of all clubs, now get the upside. Arsenal are left to decide whether this was smart restraint in a brutal market, or a missed chance that could haunt a long season.
