Virginia Cavaliers Shine at Kitty Harrison Invitational
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Virginia’s fall season began not with a gentle warm-up, but with a statement.
Across three days at the Kitty Harrison Invitational at the Chewning Tennis Center, the Cavaliers used the early-September courts in Chapel Hill as a proving ground, and a first-year led the charge.
Shannon Lam, in her first taste of collegiate competition, cut through her eight-player singles flight with three straight wins to take the title. No easing in. No feeling things out. Just a clean sweep to the top of the draw and an early marker laid down for the months ahead.
Behind her, the depth that Virginia will lean on this season started to show. Three Cavaliers — Katie Rolls, Alyssa James and Blanca Pico Navarro — each pieced together two singles victories, driving their way into the finals of their respective flights. Different opponents, different styles, same outcome: Virginia players on the last day, playing for flight titles.
For a program measuring itself against the national standard, this is exactly how a fall opener is supposed to look: new faces winning, returning players pushing deep into draws, and plenty of competitive tennis in the legs before the stakes rise.
Next Challenge
Now comes the real climb.
Virginia heads next to Cary, N.C., for the ITA All-American Championships, running Sept. 19-27. It’s more than just another stop on the fall circuit; it’s the first gateway to the NCAA Individual Championships, the earliest chance to carve out a path toward the national stage.
The early signs from Chapel Hill say the Cavaliers won’t be shy about taking it.
