Vincent Kompany Hospitalized After Training Collapse
Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing during a Bayern Munich training session on Friday, plunging the club into sudden uncertainty just days before their next Bundesliga fixture.
The Bayern head coach, who has been battling a virus, went down while watching a reserve-team session ahead of Sunday’s game against Freiburg. Medical staff moved quickly, and the 38-year-old was transferred to hospital for further checks.
Kompany’s condition had already been a concern inside the club. The Belgian was visibly in discomfort on the touchline during last weekend’s win over RB Leipzig, struggling to walk freely as he tried to guide his team through a key league match. He then insisted he was recovering after Bayern’s Champions League draw with Arsenal on Wednesday, suggesting the worst of the illness had passed.
Friday proved otherwise. The training ground turned from routine preparation into a scene of alarm as the Bayern boss collapsed while simply observing his second string.
Bayern confirmed the news with a statement, stressing that Kompany will remain under medical supervision for now. The club said: “Vincent Kompany is currently undergoing a thorough examination in the hospital and will remain under medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage all training and match-related operations.”
That means his assistants are set to take charge of preparations for Freiburg and any immediate fixtures, while the club waits for clarity on his recovery timeline.
Priority on Health
Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member for sport, underlined the hierarchy of priorities in Munich right now. “Vincent Kompany’s health is our top priority. At Bayern, we will do everything we can to ensure he makes a speedy recovery,” he said, adding: “Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, and he will be given as much time as he needs. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a quick recovery.”
Support has arrived quickly from beyond Bavaria as well. Manchester City, where Kompany became a modern club icon and title-winning captain, sent a message of solidarity on their X account: “Everyone at Manchester City is wishing a speedy recovery to our former captain and Club legend, Vincent Kompany. Get well soon, Vinny.”
For now, Bayern must continue without the man entrusted with reshaping their post-Tuchel era, while a figure revered in both Manchester and Munich focuses on the only battle that really matters this weekend: getting back to full health.
