Vincent Kompany Hospitalized After Collapse at Bayern Training
Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital on Friday after collapsing at Bayern Munich’s training ground, casting a sudden shadow over the Bundesliga champions’ preparations.
The Bayern head coach, who has been battling a viral infection in recent days, was watching a session involving the club’s second team when he went down and required immediate medical attention.
In a statement, the club confirmed: “Vincent Kompany had to seek medical treatment on Friday after collapsing during training for FC Bayern's amateurs. The first-team coach had been watching the second team's session. Kompany will undergo thorough examination in the hospital and remain in medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations.”
Sky in Germany reported that Kompany’s condition is stable, a crucial early reassurance for Bayern and for a dressing room that has quickly come under his influence.
The incident follows a demanding week for the 38-year-old. His illness had already forced him to miss Bayern’s pre-match press conference ahead of the Champions League clash with Arsenal at the Allianz Arena in midweek. Even so, he was well enough to take his place in the dugout on Wednesday night, overseeing a tense 2-2 draw against the Gunners.
Upcoming Adjustments
Now Bayern must adjust at short notice.
Kompany’s assistants will take charge of training and matchday duties while he remains under observation, with Bayern due to face Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday. The club’s medical team will run comprehensive tests before any decision is made on when he can safely return to the touchline.
For a coach known for his presence and authority on the sideline, his absence will be impossible to ignore. The question now is how long Bayern will have to cope without the man at the centre of their project.
