Vincent Kompany Taken to Hospital After Collapsing at Bayern Training
Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing while watching Bayern Munich’s second team train on Friday, casting an abrupt shadow over the club’s preparations for the weekend.
The 40-year-old head coach, who has been struggling with a virus this week, was observing the session for Bayern’s amateurs when he went down and required immediate medical attention. The club confirmed he “had to seek medical treatment… after collapsing during training for FC Bayern's amateurs” and was transported to hospital for further checks.
Kompany had already missed Tuesday’s pre-match news conference before Bayern’s Champions League tie against Arsenal because of illness, though he still took his place on the touchline for Wednesday night’s game. The episode on Friday underlined that his condition had not fully cleared.
Bayern said their coach “will undergo thorough examination in the hospital and remain in medical care. For the time being, his coaching staff will manage training and match operations.”
That means his assistants step into the foreground as Bayern turn quickly towards Sunday’s Bundesliga meeting with Freiburg. Aaron Danks, one of Kompany’s key lieutenants, had already fronted the media earlier in the week in his place before the Arsenal match, and the backroom team is now expected to handle both preparation and in-game decisions while Kompany recovers.
Inside the club, the message is clear: football can wait.
“Vincent Kompany's health is our top priority. We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure his speedy recovery,” said sporting director Max Eberl. “Vinnie will receive all the necessary medical care and support, and all the time he needs. His coaching team, in whom we have complete confidence, will take over his duties. Everyone at FC Bayern wishes Vinnie a speedy recovery.”
For a coach who built his playing career on defiance and durability, this is a different kind of test. Bayern, so used to leaning on Kompany’s presence on the touchline, must now show they can steady themselves without him while he focuses on the only result that matters this week: a clean bill of health.
