Tributes Paid to David McDermott: Former Walsall and Kidderminster Harriers Winger Dies

Tributes have been paid to former Walsall, York City and Kidderminster Harriers winger David McDermott, who has died at the age of 38.

A product of Walsall’s youth system, McDermott broke through with the fearlessness of a teenager who refused to wait his turn. In 2004, at just 16, he became the Saddlers’ youngest ever debutant, a landmark that underlined how highly he was regarded at the club.

He left Walsall in 2008 and found a fresh platform at Kidderminster Harriers. Over the next two seasons he pulled on the red shirt 54 times, chipping in with two goals and offering width and work-rate in a side that leaned heavily on its wide players.

York City came next. McDermott made 21 appearances for the Minstermen, part of a squad battling in the unforgiving lower reaches of the English game, where consistency and resilience often matter more than headlines.

His career then wound through a series of respected non-league sides: AFC Telford United, Stourbridge, Rushall Olympic and Worcester City. Those moves told the story of a player determined to keep playing, keep competing, keep chasing the game that had shaped his life from boyhood.

The numbers are modest. The impression he left on the clubs and supporters who watched him grow is anything but.
