Tottenham Hijack Mudryk Deal Leaving Leeds Scrambling

Tottenham have barged past Leeds United in the race for Mykhailo Mudryk, leaving Daniel Farke’s side searching for attacking alternatives on deadline day.

The Chelsea winger is set to undergo a medical at Spurs after the north London club moved decisively to jump the queue, with Leeds having been strongly linked and in the market for a wide forward all summer. A winger has been near the top of Farke’s wish list, but it will not be Mudryk arriving at Elland Road before the 11pm cut-off.

Spurs’ late surge has changed the landscape of the window. The deal, as reported by Fabrizio Romano, is a paid loan from Chelsea with a non-mandatory buy option set at around £75 million. Personal terms are in place and, barring a dramatic twist, Mudryk will pull on a Tottenham shirt.

Romano posted on X that “Mykhaylo Mudryk to Tottenham, here we go,” adding that everything is agreed and that the Ukrainian will re-join Roberto De Zerbi, under whom he previously flourished. For a club already spending heavily this summer, it is another statement move.

A staggering recruitment drive

Tottenham’s window under De Zerbi has been nothing short of aggressive. The club have already brought in Andy Robertson on a free from Liverpool, Marcos Senesi on a free from Bournemouth, Jan Paul van Hecke for £52m from Brighton, Martin Dubravka on a free from Burnley, Mateus Fernandes for £85m from West Ham, Sandro Tonali for £92.5m from Newcastle United, Savinho for £75m from Manchester City and Omar Marmoush on loan from City.

Mudryk is not the only arrival on the brink. Spurs are also preparing medicals for Tosin Adarabioyo, with the defender and Mudryk both poised to join from London rivals Chelsea in a double swoop that underlines Tottenham’s financial muscle and ambition.

Mudryk’s turbulent year

Mudryk’s move comes at the end of a turbulent spell in his career. The 25-year-old was suspended for four years in 2024 after failing a drug test that showed a low concentration of the banned substance meldonium. He had not played since November of that year.

His situation shifted only recently. An appeal resolved the doping case, clearing him to return to football at the end of last month. Tottenham are now betting that a fully focused Mudryk can rediscover the explosive form that once made him one of Europe’s most coveted young wingers.

Leeds forced to pivot

For Leeds, the fallout is immediate. Missing out on Mudryk alters the dynamics on the flanks and, indirectly, hands an opportunity to two Welsh internationals in Yorkshire.

Wilfried Gnonto’s future is another live thread. The Italian is expected to leave Elland Road for Fiorentina, yet that move hinges on Leeds securing a replacement. No incoming, no green light. It is a delicate balancing act on a day when time is the fiercest opponent.
