Sunderland Nears £30m Malick Fofana Signing

Sunderland are on the brink of a statement signing, having agreed a deal worth just under £30m for Lyon winger Malick Fofana in a move that underlines the club’s growing ambition on their return to Europe.

The 21-year-old Belgium forward is travelling to England for a medical and is expected to sign a five-year contract, tying one of Europe’s brightest young wide players to the Stadium of Light for the long term.

The package will cost Sunderland an initial £25.6m, with a further £4.3m potentially due in add-ons.

For a club that only recently fought its way back into the top flight, those numbers tell their own story: Sunderland are not content with merely surviving.

Fofana is understood to be relishing the prospect of joining before the club’s first European campaign in 51 years, after last season’s seventh-place finish secured a Europa League spot. A half-century wait for continental football has created a restless energy on Wearside; Fofana’s arrival is designed to give it a cutting edge.

The winger came through at KAA Gent, earning a reputation for direct running and fearless attacking play, before moving to Lyon in 2024. His stay in Ligue 1 now looks set to be brief, but impactful enough to attract attention from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

Arsenal made their move earlier in the window, with the Premier League champions attempting to prise Fofana from Lyon, but they failed to agree a fee. Sunderland stepped in, negotiated a deal, and now stand ready to reap the rewards of that opportunism.

And Fofana will not be the only new face in the dressing room.

He is set to join Kevin Danso, with the Austria defender due to arrive from Tottenham on an initial loan that includes an option to buy. The recruitment drive does not stop there: defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie have already signed on, as has midfielder Jules Ahoka, bolstering a squad that surprised many by finishing seventh in their first season back among the elite.
