Sheffield United Dominates Norwich City at Home

Sheffield United’s home patch has not been kind to Norwich City for a long time, and the numbers now read like a warning sign rather than a quirk of the fixture list.

Since a narrow 1-0 defeat in September 2017, the Blades have gone five home league games against Norwich without losing, winning three and drawing two. Different managers, different squads, same outcome: Norwich arrive, and Sheffield United walk away unscathed.

That dominance did flicker earlier this year. Norwich’s 2-1 victory over the Blades in March snapped a 10-game winless run in league meetings, a sequence that had produced four draws and six defeats. It was a rare moment of daylight for the Canaries in a head-to-head that has leaned heavily towards South Yorkshire.

Early Season Contrast

The broader early-season picture only sharpens the contrast.

Sheffield United have opened this campaign with a sturdy four-game unbeaten run in the league, one win and three draws setting a solid platform. It is the second time in three seasons they have gone four without defeat at the start, a level of early consistency the club had not touched since the 2012-13 campaign back in the third tier.

Norwich find themselves on very different ground. Three defeats in their first four league fixtures outside the Premier League mark their worst such start since the 2000-01 season in the second tier, when they also lost three of the opening four. It is the kind of beginning that tests patience and nerve before autumn has even settled in.

One side leaning on habit and resilience, the other wrestling with old anxieties. When Sheffield United and Norwich meet again, recent history is clear enough: the Blades usually set the terms, and Norwich must decide whether that March win was a turning point or just a brief interruption in a familiar story.
