Sam Edozie Submits Transfer Request at Southampton

Sam Edozie has confirmed he has submitted a transfer request at Southampton, turning a simmering frustration into a very public stand just days before the transfer window closes.

The 23-year-old winger issued a statement on Instagram, revealing he has received “multiple offers” from clubs across Europe and accusing Southampton of making a move away “extremely difficult” to complete.

A career on pause

Edozie, who joined Southampton from Manchester City in September 2022, has struggled to nail down a regular starting role on the south coast. Across two seasons he has managed 29 starts and 57 substitute appearances, flashes of promise without the sustained run he believes his development now demands.

That tension finally spilled into the open.

“Last summer I had the opportunity to move elsewhere, but the club did not allow me to leave,” he wrote. “The same happened again in January. This summer, there have once again been multiple offers from clubs across Europe.”

The winger said he is “not getting the minutes I need” at St Mary’s and framed his decision around the urgency of a short career.

“A football career is short, and I believe it is important I now have the opportunity to go somewhere I can play regularly, continue to develop and make the most of my career as a player,” he said.

Dispute over future fee

The sharpest edge of Edozie’s statement came in his claim about Southampton’s financial stance. He alleged the club have “requested as much as 50% of any future transfer fee,” a condition he says has complicated negotiations and cooled interest from would-be buyers.

Those demands, according to Edozie, have turned genuine interest into stalled talks and left him trapped between ambition and a valuation he feels is restrictive.

Loan move and uncertain future

Edozie, a former England Under-20 international, is already out on loan at Anderlecht for the 2024-25 season, a move designed to give him the regular football that has eluded him in England. Yet even from Belgium, the battle over his long-term future with Southampton has intensified.
