Queens Park Rangers’ encouraging start has caught the eye, but one seasoned observer is urging caution amid the early optimism.

Ian McCullough, a QPR supporter and journalist, sees clear signs of progress, particularly in the depth of the squad. The win at Blackburn, he argues, said as much about the bench as it did about the starting XI.

“At Blackburn at the weekend, they won the game through the strength of the bench,” McCullough said, highlighting an area that has long been a weakness at Loftus Road. This time, the replacements changed the game. Last season, that kind of impact simply wasn’t there.

“They’ve got a real quality on the bench that they didn’t have last season. In that kind of side the club has progressed,” he added, pointing to a tangible upgrade rather than vague talk of “momentum” or “spirit”.

The mood around the club has inevitably lifted after victories over Blackburn, Portsmouth and Bolton. These are the sort of fixtures that shape a season’s tone, and QPR have handled them with a level of control that suggests a more mature, better-balanced group.

Yet McCullough is not getting carried away, and he does not think supporters should either. The fixture list, he notes, has been kind.

As he put it, QPR have “played three teams really that they should be beating – Blackburn, Portsmouth, Bolton. Had they lost any of those games, questions would be asked.”

That is the tension around Rangers right now: visible improvement, especially in squad depth, set against the reality that the real examination is still to come. The early signs are promising. The real verdict will arrive when the opposition grows sharper and the margin for error disappears.
