Piastri Penalized for Impeding Lawson at Monza Qualifying

Oscar Piastri’s Italian Grand Prix weekend has taken an early hit, with the McLaren driver stripped of third place on the grid for impeding Liam Lawson in qualifying at Monza.

What had looked like a prime launchpad from the second row has been wiped out by a three-place grid penalty, handed down after stewards ruled he blocked Lawson at the first chicane during Q2.

A Split-Second Call in a Packed Q2

The flashpoint came late in the second segment of qualifying. Piastri had just left the pits on an out-lap, rejoining a circuit already bristling with cars trying to line up one last shot at the top 10.

Up ahead, Red Bull were running their own finely tuned plan. Liam Lawson had given Max Verstappen a tow earlier in the session. Now Verstappen was trying to repay the favour, dragging Lawson along in a bid to haul the rookie into Q3.

The Red Bulls were out of sync with the rest of the field. That timing clash proved crucial.

As Verstappen and Lawson thundered down towards Turn 1 on their push laps, Piastri was warned they were approaching. He moved aside for Verstappen and managed to clear the world champion without major drama.

Lawson was not so lucky.

Piastri, already committed to the braking zone and the line into the chicane, rolled into the corner and baulked the second Red Bull. Lawson lost time through the first complex and never clawed it back. His lap – and his shot at Q3 – evaporated before it had properly begun.

Stewards Accept the Dilemma, Punish the Outcome

After qualifying, Piastri was summoned to explain the incident. He told the stewards he had been alerted to the Red Bull pair but did not know they were on flying laps. Once he realised Verstappen was pushing, he moved aside as best he could.

The problem came with what followed. With his car already positioned for the chicane, there was nowhere for him to vanish. He had to roll through the corner, and in doing so he impeded Lawson.

The stewards acknowledged the awkwardness of the situation. In their decision, they noted that, given the information Piastri had and the position he found himself in, he effectively had no other options at that moment. They still concluded that he had “inadvertently, and also unnecessarily” impeded Lawson’s car.

That wording left only one outcome: the standard three-place grid drop for blocking.

Grid Shake-Up and Red Bull Fallout

The penalty drags Piastri from third down to sixth on Sunday’s grid. It also reshapes the front of the field.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are promoted to the second row, slotting in behind front-row starters Pierre Gasly and George Russell. Piastri now finds himself on row three, with more work to do in the opening laps if he wants to turn McLaren’s pace into a podium.

For Lawson, the damage was already done. Missing out on Q3 not only cost him track position, it also left Verstappen isolated at the sharp end of qualifying runs. Red Bull had hoped Lawson could serve as a dedicated tow-giver, especially with Verstappen already consigned to the back of the grid for Sunday due to an engine change penalty.

Without Lawson in Q3, Verstappen had to hunt for a slipstream alone, Red Bull’s carefully constructed plan unravelled by one misjudged moment at the first chicane.

Monza often punishes hesitation and rewards precision. On Saturday, a single out-lap and a split-second misunderstanding were enough to rewrite the grid – and potentially the shape of Sunday’s race.
