Justin Arana Joins Gilas for Clash Against Iran
Justin Arana’s wait is over. On Sunday night at the Mall of Asia Arena, the Converge big man will finally suit up for Gilas Pilipinas, activated for the fourth window clash against Iran in the 2027 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers.
His opportunity comes at a cost.
Carl Tamayo, who hurt his ankle in Gilas’ nerve-wracking 82-81 escape against Jordan in the window opener, has been ruled out, opening the door for Arana to step in. Tamayo’s injury cut short what had been a strong outing, and his absence strips the Nationals of a mobile scoring presence in the frontcourt.
Arana now steps into his first official game for the national team, a milestone that’s been brewing since he was initially called up before Gilas began preparations for this window. This time, he’s not just a practice body. He’s in uniform, in rotation, and in the spotlight.
He joins a towering frontline anchored by Kai Sotto, June Mar Fajardo, and AJ Edu, with Justine Baltazar and Troy Rosario adding length and versatility around the paint. It’s a group built to contest every rebound and protect the rim against a traditionally physical Iranian side.
On the wings, Kevin Quiambao, Dwight Ramos, and Chris Newsome bring a mix of size, playmaking, and perimeter defense, tasked with stretching the floor and easing the load on the bigs. The backcourt belongs to Scottie Thompson, CJ Perez, and Juan Gomez de Liaño, three guards who can all push the pace, attack off the dribble, and hound opposing ball-handlers.
Waiting for them is an Iranian squad stung by a 93-91 loss to New Zealand in its first game of the window. That narrow defeat will sharpen Iran’s edge; a desperate team is a dangerous one.
For Gilas, the equation is simple: protect home court, keep momentum from the Jordan thriller, and see what Arana can add to an already imposing frontline on a night when every possession will feel heavier than the last.
