Novak Djokovic Faces Tough Path at Basel Open in ATP Finals Qualification Bid
Novak Djokovic has received a wildcard to compete at the Basel Open, where he continues his effort to secure a place in the ATP Finals. The ATP 500 event kicks off on Sunday and features notable players including Stan Wawrinka, who is playing his final professional match.
Strong Field at Basel Open
The indoor hard-court tournament draws several top talents such as Ben Shelton, Arthur Fils, Taylor Fritz, Rafael Jodar, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Holger Rune. Djokovic’s main challenge is closing the gap on Jodar in the race to Turin, home of the ATP Finals.
Challenging Draw for Djokovic
Djokovic’s opening match pits him against Ugo Humbert. If he progresses, a second-round clash with Jan-Lennard Struff is likely. The quarterfinals present a tougher test against seventh seed Alexander Bublik, who holds three indoor hard court titles and previously lost only once to Djokovic back in 2021 during the Davis Cup Finals.
Advancing further would probably mean facing the highest seed remaining: Ben Shelton. Their last encounter was at the 2023 US Open, where Djokovic defeated Shelton in straight sets. Shelton, however, has improved significantly and recently made his first Grand Slam final at Flushing Meadows.
Potential Opponents and Qualification Battle
If Djokovic reaches the final, Arthur Fils is the expected opponent. Fils currently ranks sixth in the ATP Finals qualification race, trailing only Flavio Cobolli and Daniil Medvedev.
Djokovic sits tenth in the qualification race, competing with players like Alex de Minaur, Taylor Fritz, Tommy Paul, Jodar, Frances Tiafoe, Fils, Medvedev, and Cobolli. Notably, the last time Djokovic missed the ATP Finals was in 2017 due to a wrist injury. Aside from that year, he qualified every season since 2007, except he did not participate in 2024 and 2025.
The 39-year-old Serbian player holds the record for the most ATP Finals titles, winning seven times.
