Derby Injury Concerns Grow Ahead of West Ham Clash

Derby County head to the London Stadium this weekend with momentum in their pockets but bandages on half the squad. Tuesday’s gritty win over Portsmouth has set up a fascinating trip to face title favourites West Ham United, yet John Eustace’s options are shrinking by the day.

The Rams have at least been busy off the pitch. Deadline day delivered three fresh faces in Eiran Cashin, Mohammed Fuseini and David Ozoh, all of whom are available to bolster a squad that suddenly looks stretched. They may be needed sooner than anyone expected.

Here’s how Derby are shaping up in the treatment room before the journey to the capital.

Carlton Morris

Derby’s frontline has already taken a hit. Carlton Morris suffered a calf problem in the 2-2 draw with Cardiff City and has not been seen since, missing both the defeat at Swansea and the midweek victory over Portsmouth.

Eustace expects the striker to be sidelined for around two weeks. In a side that leans heavily on physical presence and work rate at the top end of the pitch, that absence bites.

Craig Forsyth

If Morris was a concern, Craig Forsyth’s situation set alarm bells ringing.

The veteran defender, outstanding against Portsmouth with his composure and experience, had to come off in the second half and needed help to leave the pitch. The sight did not inspire confidence, and Eustace did not sugarcoat it afterwards.

“It doesn’t look good,” he admitted, adding that Forsyth was “not very comfortable” in the dressing room.

Derby expect a clearer picture when Eustace faces the media in his West Ham press conference, but the early signs point to a worrying setback for one of the dressing room’s key figures.

Lewis Travis

The captain is another major doubt. Lewis Travis took a heavy knock in the second half of the 3-0 defeat at Swansea and had to be withdrawn late on. He then missed the win over Portsmouth and has been sent for a scan to assess the damage.

Derby are waiting on those results, with Eustace certain to be pressed on his skipper’s availability before the weekend. Losing Travis for any length of time would remove a crucial anchor from midfield on a day when control will be at a premium.

Derry Murkin

On the flanks, there is more frustration. Derry Murkin’s stop-start Derby career has stalled again.

The full-back underwent minor back surgery and has not featured since the 2-1 defeat to Norwich in April. He spent the summer working his way back and even took part in an open training session before the season opener. His name appeared on the teamsheet for the under-21s against Hull City, only for a hamstring problem to rule him out at the last moment.

Eustace confirmed last week that Murkin faces around four months out. It is a harsh blow for a January signing from Utrecht who had made a bright early impression. Murkin has at least tried to strike an optimistic tone on social media, posting: “Road to recovery starts now (And stay fit would be nice).”

Matt Clarke

At centre-back, Derby are already dealing with a long-term absentee. Matt Clarke came off at half-time in the Carabao Cup defeat to Lincoln City with a calf issue and was later seen in a protective boot. He missed the opening-day loss to Charlton and sat out the Cardiff game as well.

Before that Cardiff fixture, Eustace delivered the news no manager wants to give: Clarke is expected to be out for around 12 weeks.

“I think he’ll be out for 12 weeks so that’s a huge blow,” he said. “But it gives somebody else an opportunity to step up and do well.

“I think when you look at Patrick and Matt being out, they are two hugely influential players for us.

“But, again, it gives somebody else the opportunity. We try to create a no-excuse culture here, and whoever steps up will be ready.

“It’s about the squad. It’s always about the squad of players, and they’ll roll their sleeves up and always give their best.

“Sometimes you might not get the results that you want, but over the course of the season, we’ll be good with the group of players that we have.”

That message will be tested in the coming weeks.

Patrick Agyemang

Up front, Derby are still without one of last season’s headline acts. Patrick Agyemang, the USA international, ruptured his Achilles in the win over Stoke City in April, an injury that cost him a World Cup place and will keep him out until around December or January.

He has spent the summer at Moor Farm working through his rehabilitation, but Derby are refusing to rush a £5.8m asset who lit up Pride Park last season. His return will be treated as a major mid-season reinforcement rather than a quick fix.
