In the final hours, deals flickered in and out of existence, agents hovered in car parks, and sporting directors lived on their phones. By the time the dust settled, Serie A’s 20 clubs had laid out their plans for the season ahead – or, in some cases, exposed the gaps they could not afford to fill.

Judging a Calciomercato is always a dangerous game. What looks like a masterstroke in September can resemble a miscalculation by Christmas. There will be surprises. There always are. A much-hyped arrival may struggle to adapt to the rhythm and brutality of Serie A. A supposedly marginal signing might become the heartbeat of a side chasing Europe or fighting off relegation. That uncertainty is part of the drama.
