Arsenal vs Chelsea: Injury Updates Ahead of Key London Derby

Mikel Arteta will send out an unbeaten Arsenal against an equally perfect Chelsea on Sunday, and he does so with his injury picture clearing at just the right time.

The Arsenal manager confirmed that Cristhian Mosquera’s withdrawal in the 1-0 win at Aston Villa was largely precautionary, easing fears of a serious hamstring problem for the defender who impressed at Villa Park before making way for Ezri Konsa.

“He was more a precaution than anything else,” Arteta explained, stressing that the Spaniard will be checked again in the final training session before Chelsea’s visit.

Mosquera was not spotted in Thursday’s session at London Colney, but the club remain hopeful he can still feature.

If that was a relief, the sight of Jurrien Timber back on the grass was something more: a genuine lift.

The full-back has not played a minute this season after undergoing a minor groin procedure in the summer, but he has now stepped up his recovery and joined in with the group in light training. Arteta did not rule out the possibility of Timber forcing his way into the squad as early as this weekend.

“Yeah, he’s in really good condition at the moment,” said the Arsenal boss. “He’s been now a few weeks on the pitch and he’s been training with us now, so he’s in a good place.”

It is a timely boost before a London derby that already feels like an early marker in the title race. Arsenal and Chelsea are two of only four Premier League sides to have won both of their opening fixtures, and the Emirates Stadium will expect its team to extend a strong recent record in this fixture. Across four meetings in all competitions last season, Arsenal took three wins and a draw.

Not every medical update was so positive. Bruno Guimaraes faces a race against time to make the squad after taking another knock in the Villa game. The Brazilian midfielder had already missed the opening 3-0 win over Coventry City due to a problem sustained in the Community Shield rout of Manchester City, and he too was absent from the training images released on Thursday.

“Yeah, he had a knock against Villa in the previous game and he’s been assessed,” Arteta said. “Hopefully tomorrow he will be okay for training.”

Arteta’s use of the word “hopefully” underlines the fine balance of risk and reward around Guimaraes, whose energy and control in midfield have quickly become central to Arsenal’s structure. Losing him for a high-intensity derby would be a significant blow.

In the background sits the longer, more delicate story of William Saliba. The centre-back has not featured since suffering a serious back issue at the World Cup, but Arsenal have named him in both their 25-man Premier League and Champions League squads, a clear sign of optimism that he will return before the January resubmission deadline.

Arteta spoke cautiously but positively about the Frenchman’s recovery.

“Yes, we don’t really know the amount of weeks he’s going to be out because it’s about a healing process in the beginning, it’s a bit different,” he said. “We know that we have to respect certain timings. The progression has been really positive in the last few weeks, but we need to wait and see how that one reaction will start to put a lot into it.”

The message is clear: no shortcuts. Arsenal want Saliba back, but they want him back for the long haul, not just for one marquee fixture in August.

So Arteta walks into Sunday with a squad that is not yet complete, but growing stronger. Timber edging closer. Mosquera likely protected but not ruled out. Guimaraes being pushed to be ready. Saliba moving slowly, but moving.

Across the capital, Chelsea are also perfect on paper. At the Emirates, Arsenal will try to prove that their own flawless start is built on more than numbers.
