American Teenagers Shine at US Open Finals

American teenagers are turning this US Open into a statement.

As the tournament heads into its final weekend, four homegrown juniors – two boys and two girls – have played their way into championship matches on Saturday, with one of them chasing a slice of history that has barely been touched in a generation.

Latak’s shot at a rare double

At the centre of it all is 17-year-old Marcel Latak from Darien, Illinois. He has played himself into both the boys’ singles and doubles finals, and now stands on the brink of a grand slam sweep that American tennis hasn’t seen since Robin Montgomery pulled it off at the 2021 US Open.

The task in singles could hardly be tougher. Latak will face Brazil’s Luis Guto Miguel, the junior world No 1 and top seed, for the title. Miguel arrives as the established force; Latak as the surging challenger with a chance to flip the script on the sport’s junior hierarchy in one afternoon.

Once that battle is done, Latak’s day will be far from over. He will return to court alongside fellow American Tanishk Konduri, also 17, in the boys’ doubles final. Across the net: France’s Aaron Gabet and Spain’s Valentin Gonzalez-Galino, a European pairing with enough balance and bite to punish any drop in energy from the American duo.

If Latak can navigate both finals, he will become the first American since Montgomery to sweep singles and doubles at a major – and the first US boy in years to stamp that kind of dominance on a junior slam.

Sisters on the big stage

The American surge is not confined to the boys’ draw.

On the girls’ side, California sisters Kristina and Annika Penickova have played their way into the doubles final, turning a family story into a genuine title push. Kristina is 17, Annika just 16, but they have handled the New York stage with the poise of players far older.

Their reward is a shot at the trophy against the team of Polina Berezina and Alisa Terentyeva. It’s a pairing with enough firepower to test the Penickovas’ chemistry and resilience, and it promises a final with real edge rather than a coronation.

All four junior finals are set for Saturday, compressed into a single day that could reshape the junior landscape for American tennis.
