Albon Faces Major Grid Penalty at Monza Due to Power Unit Changes

Alex Albon’s Italian Grand Prix weekend has been flipped on its head before it’s even begun in earnest, with the Williams driver consigned to the back of the grid after a heavy power unit penalty at Monza.

Williams have fitted Albon’s Mercedes-powered car with a fifth Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) and a fourth Control Electronics Unit (PU-CE), both beyond his season allocation. Each of those breaches triggers a 10-place grid drop under Formula 1’s power unit rules, leaving Albon with a combined 20-place penalty.

The regulations are brutal but clear. The first time a driver exceeds the allocation of any power unit element, they receive a 10-place grid penalty. Do it again with the same component and it becomes a five-place drop, with all sanctions at a single event stacking up. Once the total climbs beyond 15 places, the punishment is simple: start at the back of the field.

That’s where Albon will line up on Sunday.

He will not be alone. Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli is also paying the price for fresh hardware at the Temple of Speed. The Italian has taken on a fifth ICE, a fourth PU-CE and a fourth Energy Store (ES), a combination that adds up to a notional 30-place grid penalty and the same fate at the rear.

On paper, the numbers are almost absurd – 20 places here, 30 places there – but the outcome is straightforward. Unless more penalties are issued before lights out, Albon and Antonelli will share the final row at Monza, staring down the entire field and a long afternoon of overtaking ahead.
