Taekwondo Silver Medallist Isabelle Sava Dies at 19

Taekwondo silver medallist Isabelle Sava has died at the age of 19 after suffering a cardiac arrest in her sleep, her family has confirmed.

The young British fighter, a rising force on the international taekwondo scene and a second-year law student, “died completely unexpectedly in her sleep after suffering a cardiac arrest,” relatives said in a statement on a GoFundMe page set up in her memory.

Emergency services were called and “fought desperately to resuscitate her,” the family wrote. “Isabelle could not be saved.”

A Life Built on Discipline

Sava had spent more than a decade in taekwondo, moulding herself into one of the brightest prospects in her discipline. Through “years of training, discipline, perseverance and determination,” she climbed to second-degree black belt, a level that reflected not just talent but a relentless work ethic.

Her breakthrough moment came in 2022 at the World Taekwondo Championships in the Netherlands, where she won a silver medal in sparring representing Team UK. It was her first major international outing. She battled through a demanding field to reach the final, confirming what coaches and teammates already knew: she belonged on the world stage.

Trenic TKD, the academy where she trained, paid tribute on Instagram.

“Isabelle began her Taekwon-Do journey with Trenic TKD at our Yeading Academy in 2015,” the club said. She surged through the grades, securing her 1st Degree Black Belt in 2019 and her 2nd Degree in 2021, and became an accomplished regional and national champion.

“Already an accomplished regional and national champion, Isabelle set her sights on representing Team UK at the ITF World Championships,” the statement continued. “In her very first international outing, she proved her extraordinary skill and spirit, battling through tough opponents to secure a silver medal in sparring.

“Beyond her remarkable achievements on the mats, Isabelle was a pleasure to teach, train alongside, and know. She will be sorely missed by everyone who had the privilege of meeting her across the Taekwon-Do community. Our deepest thoughts, love, and prayers are with her family and friends during this heart-breaking time.”

A Future in Law Cut Short

Away from the dojang, Sava was preparing to start her second year studying LLB Law at Queen Mary University of London. She was, her family said, working towards her dream of becoming a commercial lawyer.

That balance – elite sport and an ambitious academic path – defined her teenage years. Training, studying, competing, revising. A life scheduled to the minute, all pointing towards a future now left unwritten.

Her parents, Laura and Ovi, described in the fundraiser’s introduction as “facing every parent’s worst nightmare,” had only one child. The GoFundMe page was created “with an incredibly heavy heart” to help them navigate the immediate aftermath of their loss.

The campaign aims to support funeral and memorial expenses “as well as other unexpected costs the family is facing following her sudden passing.” By Monday morning, it had raised more than £13,900 of its £16,000 target from over 330 donations, a reflection of how widely she had touched people in and beyond the taekwondo community.

A Sudden, Silent Emergency

Cardiac arrest strikes without warning. The Cleveland Clinic defines it as a life-threatening emergency in which the heart suddenly stops beating and can no longer pump blood to the brain and other vital organs.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada estimates that 60,000 cardiac arrests occur outside hospitals in Canada each year, with only about one in 10 people surviving such an event. Warning signs can include sudden collapse, loss of consciousness, unresponsiveness to touch or sound, and not breathing or not breathing normally.

For Sava’s family, teammates and coaches, those clinical definitions sit alongside something far more personal: the absence of a young woman who filled a gym, and a room, with energy and intent.

A silver medallist, a scholar, a daughter. A career that had barely begun, halted in the quiet of the night.
