Barcelona Captain Raphinha Reacts to Ballon d’Or Debate After Harry Kane's Win

During the 2024/25 season, Barcelona had one of their best runs in years, securing a domestic treble under coach Hansi Flick. Raphinha was a key figure for the team, yet despite his impressive form, he ended up fifth in the subsequent Ballon d’Or voting.

Recently, Raphinha showed support for a TikTok video by creator Dani Quintana that challenges the consistency of the award’s criteria after Harry Kane took home the 2026 prize.

Comparing Raphinha’s and Kane’s Seasons

Kane’s 2025/26 campaign with Bayern Munich was remarkable, scoring 73 goals and providing eight assists over 65 games. He also claimed three domestic trophies and reached the Champions League semi-finals.

Quintana pointed out how Kane’s achievements mirror those of Raphinha the previous year. Raphinha helped Barcelona win La Liga, Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup while also reaching the Champions League semis. His 56 goal contributions made him both the top scorer and assist leader in Europe’s premier competition.

Despite these feats, Raphinha was ranked fifth in the 2025 Ballon d’Or standings, with Ousmane Dembele ultimately taking the honor after PSG’s successful season.

Controversy Over Raphinha’s Ballon d’Or Placement

The 2025 Ballon d’Or results sparked debate, with many feeling Raphinha was underrated. While Dembele’s victory was justified, Raphinha’s fifth place seemed low given his impact.

Kane’s scoring tally was undeniably higher, but Raphinha contributed beyond goals, influencing play with creativity, pressing, and movement. Now, Kane’s similar haul has earned him the award.

Seasons differ, making direct comparisons tricky, but it’s clear Raphinha’s efforts last year deserved more recognition. We think he’ll aim for an even stronger season to challenge for the prize again.
