Piero Hincapie Returns to Arsenal Training Ahead of Everton Clash
Piero Hincapie stepped back into the thick of Arsenal’s preparations on Friday, taking a full part in training and throwing Mikel Arteta an unexpected defensive boost before Everton’s visit to the Emirates.
Only a couple of weeks ago, the picture looked very different. The Ecuador international had limped out of contention in bizarre fashion, picking up an injury not in the intensity of a Premier League battle, but during a post-match warm-down after the 2-1 win over Leeds. One routine cool-down, one freak setback, and suddenly a new signing was back in the treatment room.
Arteta did not sugar-coat it at the time. He spoke of “weeks” on the sidelines for the 24-year-old, a line that usually signals a spell of frustration and rehab away from the main group. Hincapie missed the game against Nottingham Forest, confined to individual work on the grass while his team-mates pushed on without him and the schedule tightened.
Then the recovery gathered pace.
By the time Arsenal were heading to Bavaria for their Champions League tie at Bayern Munich, Hincapie had already moved past the gym and straight-line running stage. The defender was back outside, working alone, edging closer to rejoining the collective rhythm of Arteta’s sessions.
On Friday morning, he crossed that line. Full training. No caveats.
Arteta, speaking about his chances of facing Everton, kept his message simple: “Piero, let’s see. If he is able to train the next few days he can be available for Everton, which is great news.” No guarantees, but a clear hint. Hincapie is no longer a distant option. He is knocking on the door.
The mood on the pitch reflected that shift. Hincapie looked relaxed, smiling, and was quickly reminded of the dressing-room code for anyone coming back ahead of schedule. Before the serious drills began, he was sent through a classic initiation tunnel, sprinting between two lines of team-mates and coaching staff, collecting cheers, playful slaps to the head and a roar of approval. A few seconds of chaos, then straight into the grind.
It was a snapshot of a squad that feels alive, competitive, and ready to welcome back another defender into the mix at a crucial juncture of the season.
There was another moment of ceremony at London Colney. Jurrien Timber, a quieter presence off the pitch but a key figure on it, received a framed shirt to mark his 100th appearance for the club. No fanfare beyond the group, just a simple presentation and a nod to a significant milestone.
One player celebrating a century of games, another racing back from a freak setback. For Arsenal, it all feeds into the same story: depth growing, options returning, and a manager with more pieces to move on the board when Everton arrive on Saturday.
