Neymar's Fury Over Santos Pitch After Injury

Neymar left Vila Belmiro limping and livid.

Santos had just gone out of the Copa do Brasil with barely a whimper – a goalless draw at home to Palmeiras in the quarter-final second leg, nowhere near enough to overturn a 3-0 defeat from the first game. The result hurt. The pitch angered him even more.

“What happened yesterday was the worst pitch the club has ever seen,” he wrote. “It was full of holes because of works carried out one day before the match. Unbelievable! Alongside playing against the opponent, we were also playing against the pitch.”

The message painted a damning picture of a surface ripped up by late work and left in no state for a quarter-final. In his view, it didn’t just distort the game – it endangered the players.

“And to make matters worse, we had to make a greater effort because of its dreadful condition,” he continued. “No wonder 3 players were injured in the first half. Well done indeed... very poor work!”

For a club of Santos’ stature, to have their biggest name publicly tear into the state of their own stadium carried real weight. This was not a passing complaint about a bobble or a bad bounce. Neymar was pointing the finger directly at those in charge of Vila Belmiro, accusing them of compromising a knockout tie with last-minute work on the grass.

His own fitness now hangs in the balance.

“Unfortunately, I felt discomfort in my thigh,” he added. “I will undergo tests, and I hope it is not serious. We will keep our morale up and focus on what is coming.”

While Santos tried to digest an early exit and an angry superstar, Palmeiras chose a different route: mockery.

The São Paulo club fired back with a pointed, sarcastic statement of their own. They “praised” the condition of their pitch, stressing that it receives daily maintenance and, in their words, remains in perfect condition. No holes. No excuses.

They went further, saying their players feel more secure thanks to that quality and highlighting that Palmeiras are the Brazilian top-flight club least affected by injuries over the past five years. It was not subtle. It was a direct jab at Neymar’s complaints and a reminder of the standards they believe separate the two clubs.

So Santos leave the Copa do Brasil bruised, beaten and under scrutiny, with their biggest star questioning the ground beneath his feet – and a rival proudly holding up their own pitch as the benchmark.
