Manchester United Eye Sorloth as Zirkzee Departure Approaches

Manchester United’s late-window search for a centre-forward has taken a fresh twist, with Alexander Sorloth emerging as a surprise option from Atletico Madrid.

With Carlos Baleba already through the door from Brighton in a £70million deal, United’s attention has swung sharply to the top end of the pitch and the left side of defence as Tuesday’s deadline closes in. Michael Carrick wants cover for Joshua Zirkzee’s role and extra competition for Luke Shaw, and time is starting to bite.

Zirkzee edges towards Fiorentina

The Zirkzee situation has forced United’s hand. According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, the Dutchman has given the green light to a return to Serie A with Fiorentina. The Italian club have gone further than admiration: they’ve tabled a loan offer to United that carries an option to buy next summer.

Lose Zirkzee now, and United’s forward line suddenly looks thin. That reality has already pushed the club into the market, with Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic and Crystal Palace’s unsettled striker Jean-Philippe Mateta both discussed as potential replacements.

Now another name has been thrown into the mix – and it’s a big one in every sense.

Sorloth put on the table

TEAMtalk report that intermediaries have “offered” Sorloth to United, presenting the 6ft 5in Norwegian as a ready-made solution. His numbers are hard to ignore: 175 goals in 475 senior games, a career built on being a pure No 9 rather than a wide forward repurposed through the middle.

He ticks the box United are drawing around their ideal signing. A specialist centre-forward who can push Benjamin Sesko, not just stand in for him. Someone who brings presence, penalty-box instincts and a different profile to what Carrick already has.

Crucially, Sorloth is understood to be open to leaving Atletico and would consider a return to the Premier League. He knows England, even if his previous spell hardly left a mark on the division.

Between January 2018 and September 2020, he belonged to Crystal Palace but made only 20 appearances, his time there dominated by loan spells at Gent and Trabzonspor. A move to Old Trafford would offer him a second shot at English football on a far grander stage.

Atletico wait for their own domino to fall

Atletico are not blocking the door. Sorloth’s contract runs until June 2028, so they hold a strong position, but the stance from Madrid is clear: he can go for the right price once a replacement is lined up.

Their own search is already underway. Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus and Juventus forward Jonathan David are both under consideration as potential incomings. Only when one of those deals – or another striker move – is agreed are Atletico expected to seriously engage on Sorloth’s exit fee.

For now, the exact figure Diego Simeone’s side would demand remains unclear.

The situation unfolds against a broader backdrop at the Metropolitano. Barcelona and Arsenal continue to circle Sorloth’s team-mate Julian Alvarez, but Atletico insist he is not for sale. Alvarez has publicly stated he wants a transfer, a stance that has gone down badly with sections of the club’s support and added more tension to an already delicate window.

United’s late-window equation

Back in Manchester, the debate is not whether a striker is needed, but how he arrives. On the Talk of the Devils podcast, Laurie Whitwell underlined the financial reality around Old Trafford’s recruitment in these final days.

“Loan is what I have heard in terms of incoming,” he said, hinting at the constraints shaping United’s plans.

Andy Mitten echoed the sense of movement without overcommitting on the form it will take. “Will we see new players come in? I think it’s increasing, I think it’s a possibility. I don’t know if the player would be signed or loaned. If you lose a striker, United look light up top.”

That is the crux. If Zirkzee walks out for Florence, United cannot afford to drift into autumn short of firepower. Sorloth, with his size, scoring record and willingness to move, now sits on the table as a live option.

The question is simple and urgent: do United see him as the right battering ram for Carrick’s evolving attack, or does this window close with another opportunity left unexplored?
