Manchester United Considers Alexander Sorloth as Striker Search Intensifies

Manchester United’s hunt for a new centre-forward has taken a fresh twist, with Atletico Madrid striker Alexander Sorloth offered to the club in the final days of the window.

Intermediaries have put the Norway international’s name on the table, and United are giving serious thought to the 30-year-old as they work against Tuesday’s deadline to reinforce Michael Carrick’s attack.

A powerful alternative to Sesko

United’s brief is clear: if they bring in another striker, it must be a genuine central option, not just another body in the squad. Any arrival has to complement Benjamin Sesko, offer a different profile and be ready to contribute immediately.

Sorloth ticks plenty of those boxes.

The 6ft 4in forward has impressed since joining Atletico, using his physical presence, aerial strength and penalty-box instincts to good effect. With 175 career goals in 475 matches, he offers a proven scoring record and the kind of target-man profile United currently lack behind Sesko.

He also knows the Premier League. His previous spell at Crystal Palace did not ignite his career, but that experience – and his willingness to return to England – has pushed him up United’s list as the clock runs down.

Atletico’s stance and a crowded striker market

Atletico are open to a sale, but only on their terms. They will allow Sorloth to leave if, and only if, they secure a suitable replacement.

The Spanish side intend to keep Julian Alvarez but still want another striker through the door. Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus and former Lille forward Jonathan David are among the names under consideration as they reshape their frontline.

Juventus are also circling around David. Talks over a complex deal have involved Sorloth and Nico Gonzalez as possible pieces in an exchange, but those negotiations are becoming increasingly tangled. That uncertainty keeps Sorloth’s future firmly in play and gives United an opening if they decide to move.

Adding another layer, David himself has been offered to United. The club are weighing up whether the Canada international could be another solution in attack, though at this stage he is one option among several rather than a clear priority.

Mateta, Matanovic and the younger brigade

Sorloth is not alone on United’s radar.

The club have held talks with Crystal Palace over Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr, but both potential deals are described as complicated, with no straightforward path to an agreement.

Behind the headline names, United have also explored younger, developmental options. Freiburg’s Igor Matanovic, Hoffenheim’s Fisnik Asllani and RB Leipzig’s Conrad Harder have all been discussed internally as part of a broader search for long-term attacking depth.

For now, though, Sorloth stands out as the experienced, ready-made option who could walk straight into Carrick’s squad and offer an immediate alternative to Sesko.

Haaland connection and a decisive few days

There is also a curious sub-plot. Sorloth is a close friend of Manchester City star Erling Haaland, and the possibility of the two Norwegians sharing a city – albeit on opposite sides of the divide – adds a fascinating wrinkle to any move.

United, though, remain focused on footballing logic rather than sentiment. The message from inside the club is consistent: they will only act if the right profile becomes available on the right terms. If that does not happen, there is a genuine chance they end the window without signing another striker.

The pressure is building, the options are on the table, and the deadline is looming. Now United must decide: is Alexander Sorloth the forward they trust to carry part of the load alongside Benjamin Sesko – or do they walk away and gamble on what they already have?
