Julian Alvarez is locked in a transfer stand-off that cuts right to the heart of European football’s power lines – and for now, Atletico Madrid are the ones drawing them.

The Argentina striker has not reported for Atletico training since being told, behind closed doors, that the club will not sell him to Barcelona. Illness has been cited as the reason for his two-day absence, but the timing leaves little room for doubt: Alvarez wants Barca, Atletico are blocking the door, and Arsenal are waiting just outside it.

Barca shut out, Arsenal invited in

Earlier this week, Atletico informed Alvarez and his advisors privately that they would not even sit down with Barcelona to discuss a deal. No negotiating, no compromise, no softening of the stance. The answer was simply: no.

The club then went public. Twice.

Within 24 hours, Atletico issued two separate statements, each one reinforcing the same message – Alvarez will not be allowed to get his wish and move to Camp Nou in the coming days. When Barcelona president Joan Laporta insisted they still wanted to sign the 26-year-old, Atletico hit back with a blunt line that left no room for interpretation: “There is 0% chance of selling him to Barca.”

The board went further on Thursday. In a second statement, they revealed that the members of Atletico de Madrid’s board of directors had “unanimously expressed their absolute support” for the decision not to negotiate Alvarez’s transfer to FC Barcelona. For a player pushing for that move, the wall could hardly be higher.

Yet on the other side of the market, a door stands wide open.

Atletico are prepared to sell Alvarez to Arsenal and have already held direct talks with the Premier League champions over what would be one of the standout transfers of the summer. Atleti director Mateu Alemany was in London last week, where he met Arsenal officials and made the club’s position clear: Alvarez is available to them, but only for a fee of 150m euros (£128m).

Arteta’s target, Alvarez’s dilemma

Mikel Arteta is pushing hard. The Arsenal manager is described as desperate to bring Alvarez to north London this month, seeing him as a marquee addition to a title-winning squad. Arsenal’s hierarchy have responded, engaging in what sources describe as positive discussions with Atletico over a club-to-club agreement.

On paper, the framework is there. The two clubs are broadly aligned, the fee has been set, and Atletico are ready to move quickly if they get the right signal.

The problem sits with the player.

Alvarez’s determination to join Barcelona has stalled Arsenal’s pursuit. His preference for the Catalan giants is no secret, and until he gives Arsenal the green light, the deal cannot progress beyond planning and positioning. For now, the Premier League champions are effectively on standby, armed with a price, encouraged by the talks, but waiting on the one approval that matters most.

If that changes, the landscape shifts fast. It is understood that should Alvarez decide in the coming days that he is willing to join Arsenal, the transfer could accelerate at pace. The groundwork between the clubs is already in place; the delay lies entirely in the striker’s hands.
