Joshua Zirkzee's Future at Manchester United: Loan to Fiorentina

Joshua Zirkzee’s Manchester United future is edging towards a decisive turn, with Fiorentina pushing to take the Dutch forward to Serie A on an initial loan.

The Italian club are in talks with United over a deal that would see Zirkzee move to Florence until the end of the season, with an option to make the transfer permanent next summer. The structure suits all parties: Fiorentina get a creative, technical forward entering his peak years, United gain flexibility, and the player finally gets the prospect of regular starts.

There is work still to do. Sources around the negotiations are not describing an agreement as imminent, but there is clear optimism that the move can be wrapped up before the 1 September transfer deadline. Zirkzee, for his part, is open to the switch and prepared to leave Old Trafford in search of a bigger role.

His time at United has never quite caught fire.

Signed from Bologna in 2024 for £36.5m after being named Serie A’s Under-23 Player of the Season for 2023-24, Zirkzee arrived with the profile of a modern centre-forward: clever movement, soft feet, and an eye for the final pass as much as the final shot. He announced himself with a debut goal in a 1-0 win over Fulham, a neat finish that seemed to hint at a long run as United’s next attacking focal point.

The momentum stalled.

Across two seasons, the Netherlands international has managed just 27 starts in 75 appearances in all competitions. Last season underlined the problem: only five Premier League starts in 2025-26, and nine goals in total since joining the club. Cameos, flashes, half-chances. Never quite the sustained rhythm a forward of his profile needs.

At 25, he is too talented, and too valuable, to drift on the fringes.

For Fiorentina, this is an opportunity. They know exactly what he did in Italy with Bologna, how his blend of link-up play and penalty-box presence can tilt tight games. A loan with an option to buy gives them a season to judge whether the player who lit up Serie A’s under-23 ranks can now do it as a leading man.

For United, it is a reset. Zirkzee still has three years left on his contract, so the club are under no pressure to sell on the cheap. A successful spell in Florence could either revive his prospects back in Manchester or solidify his value in the market.

The clock is ticking towards 1 September. The question now is not whether Joshua Zirkzee needs a new stage, but whether Florence will be the city where he finally steps into the spotlight.
