Just behind him in the poll sits Bruno Fernandes, with just over 30% of the vote. That’s still a hefty chunk of trust after Manchester United’s flat display against Hull.

United host Ipswich Town at Old Trafford, a fixture that should, in theory, play directly into Fernandes’ strengths: set pieces, penalties, relentless involvement in everything creative. The problem is not the role. It’s the mood. That Hull performance has chipped away at the confidence of FPL managers who have ridden Fernandes’ highs and lows for years.

Still, when United have a plum home fixture, Fernandes rarely drifts far from the captaincy conversation. Many will see him as the classic bounce-back option: punished them last week, ready to repay them this one.

Arsenal, Chelsea and the temptation of form

Lurking behind the two premiums is a different kind of temptation. After impressive wins last weekend, assets from Arsenal and Chelsea are forcing their way into the conversation.

Chelsea, in particular, have a captaincy wildcard in Joao Pedro. Priced at £7.6m and facing his former club Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday, the Brazilian has surged to become the only other player with more than 5% of the captaincy vote. There’s narrative, there’s form, and there’s the sense that he could be the most-selected player in FPL by the time the first whistle blows.

Arsenal’s in-form options also appeal, especially for managers tired of being held hostage by the same two names every week. With City on the road and United under scrutiny, the Gunners’ assets offer a different route: strong performances, solid underlying numbers, and the feeling that they’re just getting started.

The decision won’t be made on gut alone. Managers are poring over every scrap of information: the on-site captaincy poll, player and team statistics from Gameweek 1, and the Rate My Team projections that attempt to strip the emotion out of the choice.

Haaland’s dominance in expected returns, Fernandes’ volume of chances created, the emerging threat from Chelsea and Arsenal – all of it feeds into a final shortlist for the armband before Friday’s 6.30pm BST deadline.
