FC Cincinnati Sign Tyrell Malacia from Manchester United
FC Cincinnati have made one of the boldest moves of the MLS season, snapping up former Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia on a free transfer in a deal that underlines their ambition to stay among the Eastern Conference elite.
The 27-year-old Netherlands international has signed a contract through June 2027, with a club option for the 2027-28 campaign, giving the “Orange and Blue” a prime-age defender with genuine European pedigree on a long-term commitment.
This is not a depth signing. It’s a statement.
Cincinnati clear the runway
To get the deal over the line, Cincinnati’s front office had to do some careful cap and roster work. The club acquired an international roster slot from St. Louis CITY SC, sending $200,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money in the opposite direction.
That is a significant outlay for a slot two years down the line, and it tells its own story: Malacia is expected to be a foundational piece, not a short-term experiment.
General Manager Chris Albright did not hide his enthusiasm, describing the arrival of Malacia as the addition of a player with genuine top-level experience. The message from the boardroom is clear – this is the kind of profile Cincinnati believe can push them from contenders to consistent challengers.
A break from the Old Trafford grind
For Malacia, the move represents a clean break from a turbulent spell at Manchester United, where promise met a wall of physical setbacks.
He arrived at Old Trafford in 2022 from Feyenoord and quickly impressed under Erik ten Hag with his aggression, energy and one-on-one defending. Then the injuries came. Momentum stalled. Opportunities shrank.
Even so, he still managed 50 appearances for the 20-time English champions, featuring in both the Premier League and European competition. Those minutes came against some of the sharpest attacking talent in the game, experience that now travels with him to TQL Stadium.
In total, Malacia brings more than 250 professional appearances in European football into the Cincinnati dressing room. For a club with serious postseason ambitions, that kind of battle-hardened profile on the flank is gold.
Fans have already had a first look at their new defender through the club’s social media teasers, and the anticipation around his debut is building quickly. A player who has faced Champions League nights and World Cup pressure will now be asked to anchor a back line in a league defined by travel, tempo and chaos.
Titles in tow
Malacia does not arrive in MLS empty-handed. His time at Manchester United, though interrupted, still delivered silverware as he helped the club end a trophy drought by lifting the 2022-23 EFL Cup.
He heads to the United States fresh from success back home as well. A recent loan spell with PSV Eindhoven saw him play his part in securing the 2024-25 Eredivisie title, another medal in a career that has quietly accumulated honours even amid the setbacks.
On the international stage, Malacia has earned nine caps for the Netherlands and was part of the Dutch squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the team reached the quarter-finals before a dramatic exit. That level of exposure, both tactically and mentally, is precisely what MLS clubs crave when they dip into Europe’s top tiers.
For Cincinnati, the equation is simple: if Malacia can stay fit and rediscover the rhythm that first took him from Feyenoord to Old Trafford, they haven’t just added a left-back. They’ve added a standard.
