Cork GAA Appoints Gavin Gallagher to Senior Management Team

Cork football has taken a decisive step into its next phase, with highly rated Castlehaven coach Gavin Gallagher set to join John Cleary’s senior management team ahead of the 2027 season.

Gallagher will come in as coach and selector, his appointment to be rubber-stamped at the next Cork County Committee meeting in November. It is a move that underlines Cork GAA’s intent as they prepare for another campaign under Cleary, this time back in the top flight.

Promotion from Division 2 earlier this year dragged Cork out of the wilderness and back among the elite for the first time since 2016. With that step up comes a demand for sharper edges behind the scenes. Cleary and the county board have responded by recalibrating the entire backroom structure.

Gallagher is the headline addition. Within Cork circles, his reputation has grown steadily on the back of Castlehaven’s recent successes, his work widely admired for its organisation, intensity and clarity of purpose. Bringing that club pedigree into the county setup is a clear statement: Cork want a coaching ticket that can match the standards of the teams they now share a division with.

He is not arriving alone. Mallow’s Terry O’Brien has been appointed as goalkeeping coach, tasked with refining a specialist position that so often defines tight championship games. St Finbarr’s Dylan Byrne will join the strength and conditioning team, another key role as Cork look to close physical and athletic gaps at the highest level.

The pressure for progress has reshaped the staff. These new faces mean the curtain falls on the involvement of several long-serving members of the previous backroom team. Cork GAA confirmed that Kevin Murray, Paddy O’Shea and Cian Sisk are all stepping away from their roles with the senior footballers ahead of the new season.

In a statement, the county board paid tribute to the trio, acknowledging their significant contribution during their time with the Rebels and wishing them well in their future endeavours. It is the familiar rhythm of inter-county life: new voices come in, respected figures move on, and the cycle continues.

For now, the focus is on November’s County Committee meeting, where the appointments are expected to be ratified. Once that formality is out of the way, Cleary will head into the next campaign with a refreshed backroom team, a place back among the elite, and the expectation that Cork’s resurgence is only beginning.
