Bradley Barcola stands at the centre of Liverpool’s summer, yet the loudest voice around his future is telling him to look elsewhere.

Marcel Desailly, a World Cup winner and one of France’s most respected former defenders, has urged the Paris Saint-Germain forward to turn his back on Anfield and head for Arsenal instead. In his view, the Gunners would “protect” Barcola better in the Premier League, offering a softer landing in England’s most unforgiving division.

It’s a striking intervention, because on paper the race looks over. Liverpool and PSG have an agreement in place: a deal worth around $163m, with $136m guaranteed, is set to take Barcola from Paris to Merseyside. After a summer of shadowboxing, briefings and counter-briefings, the saga appears to be moving towards a conclusion that suits Liverpool’s recruitment team.

The final steps are already being mapped out. French journalist François Plateau has indicated that Barcola is expected to travel to the UK for medical tests once he gets the green light from PSG. That clearance could arrive as early as today. If the schedule holds, registration rules mean he would sit out this weekend’s clash with Nottingham Forest but could be unleashed next weekend against Ipswich Town.

For Liverpool, who have lived this transfer window on a knife-edge, that would feel like a release valve finally hissing open. The clock is ticking down to deadline day, and the club’s hierarchy is working deep into the night to avoid rolling key business into January.

Barcola is the headline act, but he is not the end of the story.

At Anfield, there is a clear desire to add another winger – specifically one comfortable operating from the right. That search casts a shadow over the futures of players such as Harvey Elliott and Federico Chiesa, whose roles could shift or shrink depending on who walks through the door before the window slams shut. Liverpool want depth, variety and threat across the front line; sentiment will not stand in the way.

Across the league, another wide forward is feeling the strain of Liverpool’s gaze.

Ismaila Sarr has been heavily linked with a move to Merseyside, and the noise has seeped into his day-to-day life at Crystal Palace. His manager, Pierre Sage, did not hide the toll the speculation has taken on his player.

“I understand for everybody that you have this kind of contact, it’s difficult because you hesitate a lot, but, for the moment, he’s with us,” Sage said, underlining both the human side of the market and the club’s stance.

Sarr is tied to Palace until 2029. He is currently injured, and Sage acknowledged that some might connect that absence to the uncertainty around his future.
