Birmingham City Appoints John Murtough as Director of Football

Birmingham City have turned to a seasoned Premier League operator to steer their revival, appointing former Manchester United chief John Murtough as director of football.

The 55-year-old, who left Old Trafford in April after 11 years in a variety of senior roles, steps into the vacancy left by Craig Gardner’s departure from St Andrew’s in June. It is a heavyweight move from the club’s US ownership at a time when the team’s form on the pitch has finally caught fire.

A heavyweight hire for an ambitious club

Murtough’s CV carries weight. Before Manchester United made him football director in 2021, he had already built a reputation across English football, working at Everton, Fulham and Coventry City, and with the Premier League itself before his move to Old Trafford in 2013.

After leaving United, he headed to Serie A, taking on the role of director of global development at Atalanta, one of Europe’s sharpest operators in recruitment and player trading. Now he returns to the English game with a very different challenge: turning Birmingham’s recent momentum into a sustained push back towards the top flight.

He will officially start work on Monday, once Birmingham’s Championship trip to Cardiff City is out of the way. The timing is no accident. The January window is beginning to loom into view, and the club want their new football chief in place early enough to shape it.

Momentum on the pitch, structure off it

Chris Davies has quietly stitched together an impressive run since the international break. Three straight wins have lifted Blues to fourth in the Championship, a position that would have felt wildly optimistic not so long ago.

Now comes the structural piece. With Gardner gone and a clear hierarchy needed above the head coach, Murtough arrives as the architect-in-chief of Birmingham’s football strategy: recruitment, long-term planning, alignment from academy to first team.

The club’s American owners have made no secret of their ambition. They have the stadium, the fanbase and the market to grow. What they have lacked, for years, is stability and a clear football identity.

Murtough’s appointment suggests they intend to fix that. He has seen the chaos and expectation at one of the biggest clubs in the world. He has watched Atalanta punch far above their financial weight. Birmingham will expect him to blend those lessons and build something durable.

The team are winning, the table suddenly looks interesting, and a new powerbroker steps into the building on Monday. If Birmingham City were searching for a moment to reset their future, they may just have found it.
