Arsenal's Champions League Draw: What to Expect

Arsenal know the field. They just won’t be going back to one of Europe’s most famous stages.

With the final Champions League qualifiers wrapped up in midweek, every possible opponent for Arsenal in the new League Phase is now locked in. The picture is clear. The path is not.

UEFA will stage the draw on Thursday, August 27 at 17:00 BST, with the full fixture list – dates and kick-off times – promised no later than Saturday, August 29. Supporters won’t have to sit refreshing in the dark either; UEFA have said they’ll push out a notification on their social media channels shortly before the schedule drops, a digital drumroll before the real business begins.

Pot 1 status, but a new world

Arsenal arrive as Premier League champions and take their place in Pot 1. Under the old format, that used to feel like a shield. Not anymore.

In this revamped League Phase, the pot you’re in is more about seeding than safety. Every club is guaranteed the same structure: two opponents from Pot 1, two from Pot 2, two from Pot 3 and two from Pot 4. One match at home, one away, in each case. No gentle landings, no soft groups. Just a grid of heavyweight collisions spread across Europe.

Domestic clashes are off the table at this stage, so there’ll be no early meetings with Liverpool, Manchester City, Aston Villa or Manchester United. Those storylines are being saved for the knockouts, if the draw and results allow.

But it’s a different rule that really shapes Arsenal’s map this season.

San Siro shut – for now

Under a new UEFA regulation, clubs cannot play the same League Phase fixture three seasons in a row. It’s a small line in the rulebook with a big impact.

Arsenal travelled to face Inter Milan in 2024/25. They went back again in 2025/26. That’s two consecutive League Phase trips to San Siro. A third is now prohibited in 2026/27.

So the away tie is off. No red-and-white shirts under the San Siro lights this autumn, no third straight Milan pilgrimage for the away end.

That doesn’t mean Inter are out of the equation. The draw can still pair the sides, but if it does, the fixture will be at the Emirates Stadium. The noise, the tension, the tactical chess – all of it would come to north London instead of Lombardy.

The field takes shape

What Arsenal do know is the structure of what’s coming. The Gunners will emerge from Pot 1 into a board filled with giants and banana skins across Pots 2, 3 and 4, each of them bringing a different kind of threat, a different kind of trip.

Eight matches. Eight opponents. Eight chances to prove that last season’s title win wasn’t the peak, but the platform.

The names will come on August 27. The dates by August 29. The only certainty right now is that when Europe’s road opens up, Arsenal’s route will run through the Emirates – and not through San Siro.
