Al-Nassr's Strategic Rotation for AFC Champions League
Al-Nassr roll into their next continental assignment without the biggest name on the team sheet – and that is exactly how Ange Postecoglou wants it.
Postecoglou blinks first in brutal schedule
The trip to Uzbekistan to face Pakhtakor in the AFC Champions League Elite comes in the middle of a relentless run, and the Australian has finally shown his hand. Rotation, not reputation, will dictate this journey.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been left out of the travelling squad. So too have French duo Mohamed Simakan and Kingsley Coman, according to Saudi newspaper "Arriyadiyah". Three of the club’s headline acts, all staying home.
It is not a disciplinary call. It is a calculated one.
Postecoglou and his staff have watched the fixtures stack up across league and continent. They have seen the minutes rack up for their stars. At some point, something had to give.
Domestic machine, continental ambition
On the home front, Al-Nassr have been ruthless. Nine straight wins to open their Saudi Pro League campaign set a ferocious early pace. A brief pause came with a draw against Al-Ettifaq, but they snapped straight back into gear, beating Neom and Al-Khaleej to reach 28 points.
Second place, level on points with leaders Al-Qadsiah. The title race is already breathing down their necks.
The continental story has been more turbulent. A bruising 4-0 loss to Al-Ain in the AFC Champions League Elite opener forced a reset. Al-Alami answered in the second round, beating Uzbekistan’s Nasaf 3-1 to steady their campaign. Their third-round clash with Al-Wasl was then postponed, as confirmed by the Asian Football Confederation.
So they head to Uzbekistan with momentum restored, but with a very different look.
Ronaldo rests, others rise
Leaving Ronaldo behind is always a headline. This time, it is also a message.
Postecoglou wants his main weapons sharp when it matters most, not drained by constant travel and a punishing match rhythm. The staff are determined to shield key players from the kind of fatigue that can derail an entire season, especially when the club is fighting on multiple fronts.
Into that space steps Abdulrahman Sufyani. As "Arriyadiyah" revealed, the youngster has been handed the chance to join the squad for the continental trip, a door opening for him precisely because three of the biggest stars are staying put.
For Sufyani, it is an audition on a major stage. For the rest of the group, it is a test of depth and character.
Risk, reward, and a long season ahead
There is risk in all of this. Rotating heavily in the AFC Champions League Elite, away from home, without Ronaldo, Simakan, and Coman, invites pressure if the result goes wrong. But the calculation is clear: Al-Nassr want to keep swinging for the continental crown while protecting their position at the top end of the Roshn League.
The club’s season will not be defined by one night in Uzbekistan. It may, however, be shaped by the choice to rest tired legs now in the hope of having them fully charged when the real defining nights arrive.
